Towing - Law Changes
The Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency
Following a recent government consultation, automobile owners will be able to tow a trailer without taking a test.
When the rule changes, drivers who passed their vehicle test after January 1, 1997, will be authorised to tow a trailer weighing up to 3,500kg. This will take place as soon as feasible.
Drivers who completed their car test before January 1, 1997, can already tow without a car and trailer test; therefore, this change does not affect them.
Thus enabling the Agency to supply additional HGV examinations. To keep you safe, we still recommend that you get training before hauling a trailer.
