What is the Difference Between Anti-Static and ESD Footwear?

What is the Difference Between Anti-Static and ESD Footwear?

Posted by Helen Wood on behalf of Pressure Pump Solutions Ltd on 20th Dec 2021

Electrical resistance is a crucial feature of safety footwear. Electrostatic charge builds up in the body as a result of movement and friction. This charge can be increased by wearing shoes or clothing that are not sufficiently conductive. A discharge will occur at some point. A discharge that is too high or unregulated can have catastrophic repercussions, such as spark creation resulting in an explosion or damage to electronic equipment and components in the workplace.

1. ESD footwear protects the product, i.e., electronic equipment and circuits, from a build-up of static that might cause damage, whereas anti-static footwear protects the user from medium levels of electricity that could cause serious injury.

2. Anti-static footwear can be worn in a range of locations, whereas ESD footwear is best suited for usage in the electronics industry, laboratories, and other settings where fragile electrical components are used. IMAGE
3. According to EN 20344: 2011, anti-static shoes have an electrical resistance of 0.1 to 1000 Megaohm (MΩ), whereas ESD shoes have an extremely low electrical resistance of 0.1 to 100MΩ. IMAGE

What is a Megaohm (MΩ)? - A unit of resistance equal to one million OHMS

What is the meaning of OHMS?
One OHM is equal to the resistance of a conductor through which a current of one ampere flows when a potential difference of one volt is applied to it.
